Cameras Cctv
Do you have any concerns with CCTV cameras?

For my ICT coursework I have to talk about CCTV cameras in depth. One of the sections covered is people concerns. So, it is down to you… Any concerns? Nothing is going to be done about it – I’ll just credit you in my bibliography! Thanks x

My concern is the invasion of privacy. It’s not just that we can be watched at a specific place and time. Rather it is that we can be followed anywhere there are cameras, all over the country for hours, days, months or years or a lifetime. The technology was never designed for this purpose but this capability has been added. It’s a process known as ‘technology creep’.

Similar ‘creep’ happened with speed cameras on roads that are now linked in such a way that every journey you make can be captured and logged automatically, even though you are committing no crime. They work even if your number plate is obscured by mud because they also scan in the infra-red band which sees through mud.

A UK drivers licence includes a photo of the driver. A UK passport now has to include a photo taken in a very specific pose so as to facilitate bio-metric analysis. The quality of public CCTV devices is good enough that it enables reasonable identification of an individual automatically from their biometric data. That means anyone with a drivers licence or a passport can be tracked wherever they go that has CCTV coverage. I am aware from past work experience that this has been implemented, at least experimentally.

It would be untrue to say that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. We should all fear ‘big brother’ and the creeping encroachment of our civil liberties. We are all entitled to our private lives. That is a fundamental right.

Some people will say that ‘big brother’ has no interest in watching you and there is some truth in that but that doesn’t stop the data being gathered anyway so that your movements can be reconstructed later if the urge ever arises. For facial biometrics, that currently involves too much work to be done routinely but the only limitation is computer processing power which is growing all the time and which could, in any case, be made available now if the political will was there.

With an estimated four million surveillance cameras, Britain is by far the most-watched nation on earth. How could this come about in George Orwell’s mother country? Why haven’t other nations copied the schemes if they really are as successful as the Home Office and the police are saying? Is there a real effect in crime reduction or has CCTV only been introduced for the people’s ‘peace of mind’? A…
