Exploiting Power Through Spy Cams
Who wouldn’t like to be Big Brother? To become the all-seeing, controlling god of all? Well, maybe not “controlling god of everything” but being the all-seeing one will be simply as commanding, don’t you believe so? That can be one cause why there are several issues when it comes to utilizing hidden spy cameras, invasion of privacy being one of them. Power is actually something that anyone abhors and, ironically, anyone wants. Spy cams, while they’re an advantage to a particular individual, could be very damaging to the other. They can be an essential tool or something that would put you down.
There’s this one circumstance involving a professor who made use of a hidden camera camouflaged as a button to record misbehaving students in school. The students along with their families have filed complaints against the said professor for “misusing her authority” as well as taping the students without their consent. True, it was unlawful for the professor to do it, but if we evaluate the other direction, we could notice that what the professor was practically doing was revealing these behavioral matters to the public so that they could be addressed properly. I am relatively sure that the Virginia Tech tragedy is still new on all people’s minds. Such behavioral tendencies could have been noticed beforehand and consequently avoided the incident from happening. If a hidden spy camera is what it takes to avoid such tragic episodes, then I won’t mind teachers recording their students at school by any means.
Nevertheless, there are also a few who misuse the benefits of hidden video cameras. I will suppose everyone is aware of issues of shameful behavior caught on tape that are being utilized to blackmail a person. Or those that obviously invades other person’s privacy as in placing hidden cameras in locations wherein surveillance is not necessary, such as the bathroom or personal quarters for reasons of personal gratification or lascivious intent. Stalking utilizing spy video cams is also another mode of misuse of this technology.
However, there’s one thing that surprises me. Some homeowners utilize nanny cameras to monitor their baby-sitters and house maids while they’re away. And these nannies aren’t conscious of the existence of the spy cam till they get caught doing some monkey business and dealt with about it. But nobody seems to be complaining. If they get caught mistreating a kid or doing something inappropriate, the matter of the nanny’s right to privacy is never raised. It’s because the owners have the power to do whatever they want to protect the family and the house helper did something incorrect.
Thus, when is the utilization of concealed surveillance cameras right and when is it not? Seemingly, the thin red line dividing them is much thinner than we believe. When the one using the surveillance cam is in power, its use is justified. Nevertheless, if selecting to use hidden spy cams will make us more secured, then I am for it. Moreover, why would I be concerned about it when I’m not doing anything that’s against the law or is morally incorrect? However, as long as they keep well behind the line, it would not be a concern.
