Why does my new hanging florescent light trip the circuit when I turn it on?
I’m adding one of those dual 4′ bulb florescent lighting doo-hickeys, but when I plug it in and turn it on the outlet in my garage with the reset button on it trips the circuit. No matter how many other things on the circuit are plugged in, when the light turns on it trips the circuit. I plugged it into an outlet in my office and it works fine… I don’t get it.
Unless there is a short in the case then you need a new one. However, you might be giving off an RF current that is tripping the circuit breaker. The way to get over this is to use a green ferrite ring that the feed cable wraps around three times. It acts like a choke to RF currents. This is for others reading this.
Having said this, the home made way to over come this using ferrite is to break open an old radio and, an stripping out the antenna stick. This aerial is made of ferrite and is usually a black stick 3/8th inch by about four inches long. Strip off the wiring take this stick and wind round 32 turns of twin wire. Use glue to keep it all together. At each end, solder (get this from a TV repair shop) a 0.01 uf capacitor across the wires. Solder a new feed lead to the lighting circuit and solder the other to the out put of the circuit breaker. Job and done.
