Want Something Different To Collect? Confederacy’s War Bond Could Be Just The Thing
People who know their history are aware that Confederate became worthless long before the conclusion of the War Between the States, so much so that people resorted to burning it for warmth or papering their walls with it. Today, however, Confederate money is very much worth collcting. Confederate war bonds are even more so.
Confederate bonds brought in funds for vitally needed food and clothing and other necessities for Rebel soldiers in the course of the war. They constituted a means for the the CSA to raise funds by getting its citizens and others to lend to it. A person would lend money to the southern government and in return be given a bond, which was a inscribed with a written promise to repay the bond purchaser–along with interest–beginning on a certain date in the future.
The end of the conflict, and the destruction of the South, guaranteed that the lenders never collected on what they were owed. The bonds themselves often languished for years in boxes and closets.
Nowadays, the bonds that survived these many decades are prized by collectors. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (along with other types of paper items) in the online auction market for some extra spending money.
The southern nation’s war bonds can be appreciated as decorative items (if framed, they should be matted using archival type materials to prevent damage; glare-free glass is also an excellent idea, despite the the extra expense.
The Confederate government had printed a fairly large number of bond issues during the course of the conflict. For each issue, several different “denominations” (that is, the bond’s face value) were printed. These all had a variety of differing decorations, and sometimes even different pape colors, to distinguish them one from the other.
In the 19th century when ornamentation ruled the day, the Confederate bonds were perfrect examples of the art of embellishment. In addition to having the terms of the certificate printed in cursive script, they frequently included line graphics of farm and city scenes along with people, both realistic and mythological.
