Notice The Warning Signs
All work places have to guide behaviour, inform of the locations of emergency facilities and the location and nature of any hazardous materials – hazard signs are the constant reminder. They are the quite persuaders of what and how to do the diverse range of tasks performed within the organization; routinely in a safe manner.
To perform this wide variety of tasks, health and safety signs communicates expected behaviour and the locations of emergency equipment and hazardous materials.
Over the years accepted nomenclature has developed a globally accepted nomenclature with signs placed into functional groups. Grading from the informational to the imperative, “failure to observe this sign is life threatening”, they play a crucial role in directing behaviours.
Each group of signs follows a different graphic format; color coded and principally respecting international conventions with local adaptations. Each group is graphically the same, with a banner unique in color and graphical style to that group.
Of all the groups the Notice sign commands or should we say, demands least observance – it is informational in content. The sign banners for this group include “Notice”, Restricted area signs, Security Notices, and Be careful.
In jumping from one sign group to another, there is clearly no right or wrong group classification. It all depends on the safety committee’s consensus about the hazard.
Demanding|Calling for] attention are the Stop Signs. These are designed to delineated actions that are not allowed. They define preferred actions and should they not be followed, the consequences are not severe and are generally not life threatening. However, these signs often cover legislated behaviours and failure to observe them may have legal implications.
Examples of these signs are No Thoroughfare signs, No smoking signs, No exit signs No running and so the list goes on. And you can easily find custom versions of these to suit every situation.
Placing the safety signs within the workplace is the task of the employer, but complying with them, the task of the employee. The more life threatening the message content the greater the onus on the employer to deliver appropriate training and for the employee to strictly observe the content of the safety sign – safe work is no accident.
