We do hear the sound of a police siren on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it’s a fact of everyday life in the cities and towns. You would be forgiven for not giving any thought to a police siren or what it is used for. We tend to think of sirens as a nuisance and a pain in the butt because we hear them with regular monotony. Whilst the siren sounds ring out around us we won’t actually think much about them but all emergency vehicles have them and without them we wouldn’t be as safe and neither would the emergency personnel using the vehicles.
You may think that a police siren only makes one sound but that isn’t true of the modern units. A steady long blast, a wail or an off/on wail are all variations that the police siren units can produce. Some sirens are hooked up to an air horn facility and the modern units are easy to use and very effective as an audible warning. There are some siren systems that can be linked to a personal address system and link to a CB radio, which makes them very versatile. The police siren when used in conjunction with flashing lights is highly effective as a warning.
The sound of a police siren in the main is to indicate a vehicle is responding to an emergency, and siren and lights on a police vehicle would mean they are responding to a priority 1 call. The police siren ensures the vehicle is noticed even when it can’t be seen directly. You can hear sirens from a distance but you can’t see lights when they aren’t in your direct line of vision. The police siren is one of the most important pieces of equipment on a police vehicle. Without the siren many emergency vehicles would be seen but not heard and we need both visual and audible notice that a vehicle is in the vicinity.
The flashing lights on a vehicle should be enough to inform road users that a vehicle is approaching and needs them to move over. Unfortunately, the lights are not always seen, in very bright light or very poor conditions, a flashing light can be nearly invisible, but if the police siren can be heard then you know to look out for a vehicle approaching or up ahead. Pedestrians need to be aware of danger and what they may be approaching as well as other road users. The police siren will notify us of potential danger and we can act accordingly to avoid it.
The police siren also safeguards the personnel in a police vehicle as it makes people aware of their presence. Sadly, we do tend to ignore sirens, as they are a regular thing on our streets. The police siren is a very particular type of warning, and sirens have been in use for many years and always used to signify danger, hazard or a warning. Sirens were used during WWII to tell people to go to a shelter as an air attack was imminent, and the siren also sounded as the all clear when it was safe. The sound of sirens has been around for some time and it will continue to be heard for some time yet in conjunction with emergency situations.
