What are “Creative Commons” licensing, and how do I find out what companies offer it on their software?
I’d like to be completely “above board” on the software I install on people’s computers, but the simple fact is many people I help out can’t afford to [ay retail prices for needed software: senior citizens or people on disability with very limted imcomes. I’ll fix or set up their computers, and just not charge them at all for the software. In some cases, I’m sure I’m breaking copyright laws. I’d prefer not to, if it can be avoided. Any suggestions? I’ve heard that some companies have “creatve commons” licensing available for non-profit/personal use of their software, but which ones? How do I find out?
Creative commons licenses generally apply to media, rather than software, that is pictures, text, and music. The idea is that certain rights that are exclusive to the author of a work are licensed to the public, such as the ability to copy, share, and modify.
The concept originally came from software though, where the terms “free software” (free as in freedom) and “open source” are more common. It’s the same idea, distribution and modification are okay, under certain conditions, such as keeping all of the original author’s copyright notices and licensing notices. there are a few that require the modified versions also be licensed under the same terms.
Opens-source software is more common on Linux (which itself is open source) and Macintosh than it is on Windows. If you do a search for ‘open source’ and the type of software you want, you should be able to find something.
