Solid SIPs Enhance Flat Pack Houses
The solidity of the structural insulated panels (or SIPs) that are used in flat pack construction greatly enhances the final flat pack house, reports SIPs Direct (http://www.structuralinsulatedpanels.co.uk/). SIPs insulated panels are made from OSB wood which is structurally laminated with a high density polystyrene foam core. This results in a structural insulated panel which is extremely strong and rigid, eliminating any gaps and spaces in the walls and roof and floors.
A flat pack house would be nothing without the insulated panels of which it is made. The material OSB/3 board is comprised of softwood flakes/strands bonded together with MUPF (melamine urea-phenolic) resin, MDI (diisocyanate diphenylmethane) binder and waxes. ‘Bonded together’ is the key here: the materials are highly bonded to the extent that the final wood is extremely rigid and solid, allowing for a tight-fit construction which is unrivalled by more traditional construction methods. Solidity allows a flat pack house to be built in a completely air-tight, water-tight and wind-tight fashion.
Let’s consider the ways in which this ‘tight-fit’ construction enhances the finished product: the flat pack home itself. A flat pack house made with insulated panels has no gaps or holes through which air and wind can escape. That means heating of the house stays within the walls, floor and roof, and cold air outside cannot permeate. This results in lower energy bills and a ‘greener’, more environmentally-friendly construction. The fact that the house arrives pre-fabricated on-site means that it is already air-and water-tight from day one, allowing the final construction to take place in any weather without sacrificing the build in any way. Finally, the absence of gaps thanks to the solidity of the SIPs means that the construction is far more sound-proofed than houses built using traditional building methods.
