Building a handmade box?
What would be the cheapest and most simple way to build a small wooden chest?
It seems even craft stores charge top dollar for any of their products. I’d like to hinge it and screw in a latch to hold a padlock.

Wooden boxes are not difficult to make. However you do need a few basic wood working tools. Lumber is not as cheap as it was, you can easily tight up $10 to $20 in lumber for a small box. The cheapest hinges I have found were at Walmart. Chain store hardware companies. like Home Deposit, cost slightly more. The tools you will need to construct a simple wooden box, include: a saw to cut the boards. glue, clamps (or some way to hold the pieces together while the glue dries). You can use screws to hold the box together instead of wood glue. In that case you need a drill for the pilot hole, screws and a screwdriver.
You may find a wooden box in a thrift store for less than it would cost to build one.
