Lansing Area High Crash Roads and Local Accident Resources
As another Michigan winter arrives to bring us challenging driving conditions, Lansing auto accident lawyers want to make mid Michigan drivers aware of auto crash statistics when driving on high crash roads in Ingham County. The Michigan State Police recently published 2008 data for Michigan’s top 100 high-crash roads with two stretches of Ingham County roads making the list. Based on this new data, the Lansing lawyers of Michigan Auto Law have reviewed the list to identify the Lansing area high crash roads based on the number of car crashes reported to police in Ingham County:
- East Grand River Ave Between N Clippert St and Saginaw/Grand River Cutoff
At not even a quarter mile in length, this stretch of Grand River saw 45 car crashes in 2008, making it number 13 on the list of Michigan’s top 100 high crash roads. With the US127 exit ramps and Saginaw Street intersection, this area is a busy corridor between Lansing and East Lansing’s MSU campus.
- West Grand River Ave Between Okemos and Marsh Roads
Located in Meridian Township, this stretch of Grand River had 34 car crashes in 2008, making it number 69 on the list. With Meridian Mall and numerous restaurants and retail shopping condensed in this area, it’s no surprise this stretch of road made the top 100 list.
When reviewing the two high crash roads listed above, keep in mind the sheer volume of crashes doesn’t always tell the whole story. There are many risk factors that contribute to car crashes on each road in the Lansing area. For example, a road can have a high number of crashes, yet all of them could be vehicle damage with no injuries. Another road with a minimal amount of reported crashes could have most of them resulting in severe personal injuries – another indicator of how dangerous the stretch of road can truly be.
Highlights of Lansing Crash Statistics
Michigan State Police data shows that 72% of the 316,057 crashes statewide in 2008 happened on road segments. The remainder occurred at intersections. In addition, of the 915 fatal crashes in Michigan last year, over half involved just one vehicle. These statistics remind us that driving on a quiet stretch of a local road can be just as dangerous as navigating through a crowded intersection during rush hour.
- The Lansing lawyers of Michigan Auto Law have compared 2008 traffic crash facts for Ingham County to 2007 and while overall the number of crashes decreased by 4%, the number of fatal crashes grew slightly. When reviewing the types of roads where crashes occurred, the % of crashes on Interstate, US Route, state and local streets remained the same as 2007, with over half (57%) of crashes continuing to occur on local streets.

How to Protect Yourself
Now that you are aware of the high crash roads throughout Lansing and Ingham County, exercise more caution than usual when driving around these areas. Stay alert, follow traffic signals and maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front. Exercise extreme caution while driving on Michigan’s thirteenth highest crash road – East Grand River near US127.
With so many auto accidents happening in and around Lansing and with Michigan’s notorious no-fault law and time limits to file accident cases, it’s wise to follow an accident scene checklist in case you find yourself or a loved one in a car or truck accident. Actions you should take include staying calm and assisting injured passengers, documenting ALL injuries, and writing down as much detailed information as possible such as license plates, location, weather factors, and witnesses.
