Safely Store your Passwords

How to securely store all of your passwords.

Do you have online accounts with?

  • Banks
  • 401 K accounts IRA accounts
  • Online Trading accounts
  • Buy items on Amazon EBay other web sites
  • Have mail accounts on GMAIL, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc

Are all of your passwords the same?     If someone guesses your mail password, does that mean they will automatically be able to login to your 401 K account???

What happens if you are in a car accident, and no one in your family can access your accounts online?      Yes, someone else can call in, and explain the situation, and then it might take weeks to resolve.     In fairness to the banks and credit card companies, do you really want someone else to easily access your accounts?

If you have a lot of different online accounts, with each one having a slightly different user name password, and you find you frequently forget them, you may want to store them in a secure place.

A secure place is NOT under your keyboard or on a yellow sticky.

You can use Kee Pass Software.  (It’s Free)    Kee Pass will store all of your passwords in a secure file.   This file will be saved on a USB Stick, and stored in a safe place.   Should someone ever hack into your computer, they will not be able to access your file, as it will not be connected.     Should someone find your USB stick, they will still have to break the encryption.

Kee Pass software uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES / Rijandael) with a key size of 256 bits.  (For those of you who don’t understand encryption, just know that this is really secure and extremely difficult to break.)

Here is how to store all of your passwords in a secure manner.

1)      Get 2 USB memory sticks, the 4 GB ones are fine, but really any size will do.     The 4 GB ones cost about $ 20 each these days.   Yes, you need two of them.   You can also get IRON KEY, but that is a lot more money.

2)      Get the program Kee pass, (pronounced Key Pass) and download the ZIP version.

a.        http://keepass.info/download.html     Use version one for now, until version 2 is no longer beta.

b.      Download it, and create a directory on your USB drive and save it there.

c.       Extract all the files to the same directory.

3)      From the USB Stick, run the program KeePass.exe

4)      Create a new database, under File, NEW.    Store the file in the same directory as the programs.    It takes up very little room.

5)      Create a password for this file.    This password should be different from all your other passwords.

This will be the main password, to open the database.

NOTE:   IF YOU FORGET THIS PASSWORD, IT CANNOT BE RECOVERED.

6)            Leave all options the same.

7)            To add an entry, from the menu, choose edit, add entry

For title, put in a title.

For username, put in username.

For password, put it in twice.

You can fill in the other fields, if needed.

8)            To retrieve the password, open kee pass, and click on the right hand pane, then double-click on the entry.   On the right, you will see three dots, which will show you the password.

9)            Once you are done saving your passwords, quit the program.

10)          Now copy that directory to your other USB Stick.

11)          Take both sticks and store them in a safe place.   Such as:

                                A safe

                                A Safe deposit box

                                A locked drawer.

Both USB sticks should be in different locations.

12)          Once this is setup, you should tell someone else the password to the Kee Pass database.     Some of you might think this is a security hole, but in case of a car accident or other similar problem, someone else really needs to know this password.
